12th - I came home from school to a beautiful new bedroom! My mom must have been working on the drapes & bedding for weeks, and when I left for school she had painted my room lavender (my favorite color at the time) & hung the most beautiful curtains with tiny purple flowers & lavender Austrian puff shades. She also made a matching bedspread that she put over a pretty little white French provincial poster bed with a matching dresser & vanity. My grandfather & father had painted the furniture & I felt like a princess when I came home to such a beautiful new bedroom!
16th - Mom let me cut school so I could go to the DMV & take my driver's test. I passed & got my license. I felt so grown up! My dad was always working on old cars & he gave me a little four cylinder, yellow Chevy Nova that had a black primer spot on the driver door - my friends called it the "bruised banana." It had absolutely no power & rattled when I drove it on the freeway. I put a sign on the ashtray that said, "This car runs on gas, not friendship." My friends would donate to the cause.
21st - I was a student at BYU & my friends took me skiing in Utah - Snowbird. I was miserably cold! Not only did I not know how to ski, but I didn't own proper ski clothes - I was in my sweat shirt & jeans! I spent most of my time on my butt, wet & frozen! Worst. Birthday. Ever!
35th - I felt all alone - a fearful young widow, afraid of my future.
50th - It was my last year teaching at Graystone & I celebrated with my 1st grade students - my favorite class ever! We were making plans to build the Riverhouse, we had 7 grandchildren, & I was looking forward to becoming a full-time grandma!
60th - All the girls, with the help of Paul, surprised me with a weekend trip to Disneyland! We rented a house across the street, we ran around the park & laughed so hard & had so much fun! BEST. BIRTHDAY. EVER!
